German Language Examinations



The following German Language examinations are offered at an additional cost. For exam dates and additional fees please contact WLE. Start Deutsch, ZD and ZD Plus examinations are held at the Academy.

  • Start Deutsch

Prerequisite: 200 contact hours or Total Beginner level

The Start Deutsch examination proves the ability to understand and complement simple information. Participants can understand short texts and instructions in familar situations e.g. timetables, advertisements, and brochures, and can ask and answer simple questions using familiar language structures.

  • Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD)

Prerequisite: 400-600 contact hours or Elementary to Intermediate I levels

The ZD language examination proves the ability to master important situations requiring the spoken and written use of the language. It shows the knowledge and skills to be able to follow and actively take part in everyday conversations, both in private and job-related contexts. It also proves the ability in understanding and expressing written opinions on a wide range of texts.

  • Zertifikat Deutsch Plus (ZDPlus)

Prerequisite: 600-800 contact hours or Intermediate I to Intermediate II levels

The ZD Plus examination proves the ability to master all important situations requiring the spoken and written use of the language. It shows the knowledge and skills to be able to follow and actively take part in every day conversations, both in private and job-related contexts. It also proves the ability in understanding and expressing written opinions on all categories of texts.

  • Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung (ZMP)

Prerequisite: 800-1000 contact hours or Intermediate II level

The ZMP examination proves the participant's ability to master all situations requiring the spoken and written language. It proves good knowledge and skills to be able to actively take part in all kinds of conversations, in private and job-related contexts. It also proves the ability to understand difficult texts and write comments on all categories of texts.

  • Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (ZOP)

Prerequisite: 1000-1200 contact hours or Advanced level

The ZOP examination certifies a very good knowledge of standard German. With the acquired language skills for ZOP, participants can understand difficult texts and can express themselves well both verbally and in writing. Participants who have passed ZOP are not required to take a university entrance examination in language proficiency at many German universities.
