Q. How long does it take to complete one proficiency level?
A. Around 200 lessons = 8 weeks.
Q. What is planned on the first day of class?
A. Total Beginners start class at 8:30 am on the first day. Participants with previous knowledge of German are required to submit the Quick Test at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the program. Then on the first day of the program an oral placement test is held to place students in the correct level. Students are also given a walking tour of Heidelberg's Old Town.
Q. When do I have class?
A. Intensive Program (25 classes/week): 8:30 am to 12:45 pm, Monday to Friday.
Super-Intensive Program (30 classes/week): same as Intensive Program above + 2 afternoons a week.
Q. Which books are used?
A. A text and exercise book, provided in the Total Program, are required on each program level. Additional material will be provided free of charge.
Q. Which teaching method is used?
A. The Communicative Method, i.e. communication and interaction with the class participants.
Q. What are the qualifications of the teaching staff?
A. Academic qualification (Staatsexamen, M.A.). Teaching experience in German as a foreign language.
Q. What certificates/diplomas can I receive?
A. Upon successful completion of the program participants receive a Certificate of Attendance. If an additional German Language Examination is passed the appropriate Diploma will be awarded.
Q. Who are the typical program participants?
A. Young adults, working professionals, scholarship students, students, and Au Pair.
Q. How old are the average program participants?
A. The average age of students is between 20 to 30 years; 20 to 25 years in the summer months.
Q. What level of German language ability will I have after an 8, 16 or 24 week program?
- After 8 weeks: you will be able to converse in basic, everyday life situations like buying food, asking for prices, the time of day, etc.
- After 16 weeks: you will be able to communicate in most everyday situations, communicate in simple German and write short texts or letters.
- After 24 weeks: you will be able to communicate in more difficult situations, discuss more abstract subjects, and write longer more complicated texts.
Q. When does my accommodation start?
A. Accommodation starts on the Sunday prior to the first day of the program and ends at 12 noon on the Saturday following the last day of the program. Extra nights are available depending on availability.
Q. Where is the accommodation located?
A. The student residence is located approximately 15 minutes from the school. Host families are situated up to 30 minutes from the school.
Q. When will I receive the address of my housing for my stay in Heidelberg?
A. Accommodation details are provided together with the Welcome Pack after enrolment is completed.
Q. When can I move into the student residence?
A. Students should schedule their arrival on Sunday before the program starts between 6 and 8pm. Students arriving outside these times should contact WLE to arrange pickup of keys.
Q. When can I arrive at the home of my host family?
A. On the Sunday before the program starts. Arrival details are required at least 10 days before arrival to make sure your host family will be home when you arrive.
Q. What items do I need to bring with me?
A. Clothes and personal items. For those staying in a student residence, you should also bring towels and dish towels. Bed sheets are provided in student residences and are changed every 2 weeks. For students staying with a host family, beddings and towels will be provided by the family.
Q. If I live in a student residence, where can I wash my clothes?
A. Washing machines and dryers are available at the student residence. Laundry coins can be purchased at the residence.
Q. If I live with a host family, will they also wash my clothes?
A. Yes, but ironing is not included in this service. Please make arrangements with your host family.
Q. Are there phones in the student residences?
A. Students can receive calls in the student residence. However, outbound calls cannot be made from these phones. Please make use of the pay phones in the surrounding area or use your own cell phone.
Q. Is it possible for me to use the telephone in my host family's home?
A. No. Please make use of the pay phones in the surrounding area or use your own cell phone. You can receive phone calls until 10 pm. Please show consideration for your family.
Q. Where can I find general information and a city map for Heidelberg?
A. A Welcome Pack, including general information about Germany and Heidelberg, a city map and various other information, will be sent to you once you have enrolled in the program.

Q. Of which organizations is the Academy of German Language a member?
A. The Academy is a member of the Fachverband Deutsch als Fremdsprache (FaDaf) and the International Certificate Conference (ICC). The Academy is also an official examination center for the European Language Certificates (TELC) and a licensed TestDaF center.
Q. Where is the Academy located in Heidelberg?
A. The Academy is centrally located, less than 5 minutes walk from the main bus and tram stop, Bismarckplatz.
Q. How do I get to school?
A. From the student residence it is approximately 15 minutes walk to the Academy, by bus only 5 minutes. Host Families are within easy access of public transport and located up to 30 minutes from the Academy. Participants will be provided with detailed information on how to reach the Academy from their chosen accommodation in the Welcome Pack.
Q. How many classrooms are there at the school?
A. The Academy of German Language is located in a villa surrounded by gardens. It has 8 main classrooms.
Q. Will I receive a student ID card for special student discounts during my stay?
A. Yes, each student receives a student ID card which can be used for discounts on tickets for the theatre, concerts, museums, the swimming pool, sport centers and public transport.
Q. How can I get access to the internet?
A. Students living in the Residence can bring their laptop. The Internet access at the Residence costs EURO 5 per week (WLAN). For students living in a Host Family, there are many internet cafes near the Academy (average price is EURO 1 per hour).

A. The Euro.
Q. Where can I get money exchanged?
A. At any local bank or automatic cash machine.
Q. How much cash would I need on average per week?
A. The amount of spending money needed varies greatly from person to person. Students staying at a Host Family with meals provided will need less money than those staying at the Student Residence. Budget approximately € 105 to € 130 depending on your needs.
Q. Do I need a visa for Germany?
A. Please ensure that you are aware of any visa and entry requirements and that you have made appropriate arrangements.
Q. How do I get to my accommodation from the Frankfurt International Airport?
A. Airport pick-up from the Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) is provided for Total Program students. You will be picked up and taken directly to your accommodation. Please provide us with your arrival details such as flight number, airline, arrival date, arrival time, arrival airport and departure airport no later than 10 days before your arrival.
Q. Can I obtain Emergency Travel and Medical Insurance while at the Academy of German Language?
A. Yes, Emergency Travel and Medical Insurance is included in the Total Program fees. Insurance can also be arranged for Tuition Only students for an extra fee.
